Understanding Stain Removal From Carpets & Upholstery

Most stains are typically removed as part of our standard carpet and upholstery cleaning process. However, some stubborn stains—such as paint, coffee, tea, red wine, blood, or juice—may require extra attention.

We use a range of specialised solutions to target and reduce most stains effectively. While we can often eliminate tough stains from carpets, rugs, and upholstery for good, factors like age, previous DIY treatments, and how long the stain has been there can affect the outcome.

If you experience a spill, don’t delay—call us right away for the best chance of removal.

Expert Pet Urine Removal for a Fresh Home

Pet urine in carpets requires specialised treatment to effectively repair the damage. It’s one of the most challenging tasks in carpet cleaning because it not only creates persistent odours but also contaminates the underlay and subfloor, often leaving stubborn stains. Pets tend to return to the same spots, leading to ongoing soiling. We begin by using UV light to identify these areas, then apply targeted odour neutralisation and stain removal treatments.

Please note, due to the complexity of this service, we cannot guarantee a complete solution. In some cases, especially with heavy contamination, we may recommend carpet replacement. Unfortunately, there are limits to what cleaning can achieve.

The Golden Rule for Stains Before They Settle: Act Quickly!

Addressing spills immediately increases the likelihood of cleaning them completely or almost entirely.

The flip side is that if you try to clean a stain yourself and are unsuccessful, you may unintentionally alter its chemical compound, making it more difficult for professionals to remove the stain later.

Many online tips don’t consider your carpet's type or colour, and DIY treatments can sometimes cause irreversible damage. While calling a professional does cost money, it can save your carpet’s appearance in the long run.

So, what should you do?

Avoid Harsh Solutions

Use a neutral pH solution that won't strip or alter your carpet’s colour, texture, or the chemical makeup of the stain.

Do Not Scrub
Do Not Overwet
Avoid Coloured Rags
Do Not Apply Heat
Do Not Let Stain To Dry

Avoid rubbing or brushing, as it can cause fuzzing, pile distortion, and deepen the stain, making it harder to remove. Blot instead.

Use only a small amount of water at a time, as heavy application can leave unsightly ring marks once it dries.

Rag dye can bleed onto the carpet or fabric you're blotting, causing a new stain. Always use a white or colour-safe cloth to prevent this.

Avoid applying heat to carpet stains, as it can set the stain permanently, making removal much more difficult or unlikely.

This helps prevent the stain from setting, as dried stains are harder to remove. Place a clean towel over the damp spot and wait for expert help.

First... What NOT to do.

In urgent situations, the quick guide below may help you prevent further damage and do what you can while waiting for professional help.

4. Keep the area moist by spraying it with water regularly and covering it with a damp cloth until professional help arrives. The goal is to prevent it from drying completely.

2. Blot the stain with a clean towel to absorb the spill—avoid rubbing or scrubbing. Work from the outside toward the centre to prevent spreading the stain.

1. If there are any solids, gently move them towards the centre with a blunt-edged instrument to prevent spreading, then scrape them off or vacuum if applicable.

5. Engage the services of a reputable carpet and upholstery cleaning provider who can attend on the same day.

3. Lightly dampen the towel with warm water (lukewarm water is preferable) and continue blotting to lift the stain.

6. For enamel paint, cover the spill with plastic wrap to prevent it from drying out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a risk of carpet discolouration after stain treatment?

There is a possibility, especially if DIY solutions or other products have been previously used, as they may react with our chemicals. To minimise this, we carefully rinse the area before applying our treatments. In most cases, DIY solutions can be too harsh and may cause bleaching or texture damage, but we always aim for the best possible outcome.

Do you treat pet urine contamination on upholstery?

Pet urine on sofas can seep deep into the foam, making full extraction difficult. However, we’ve found great success with most upholstery treatments. We perform a deep extraction, apply odour-neutralising solutions to address odours, germs, and stains if needed.

Do you guarantee the complete removal of a stain?

Complete stain removal cannot be guaranteed, as some stains can cause irreversible damage or dye the fibres, and others may be too old or deeply embedded to fully remove. The outcome depends on factors like the stain’s type and age, carpet fibre material, and any previous DIY treatments. While a guaranteed result isn’t always possible, we use a range of advanced chemicals tailored to effectively treat a wide variety of stains, and many carpets have been successfully restored to their original best.

Why is pet urine contamination difficult to resolve?

Pet urine often penetrates deep beyond the surface of the carpet, soaking through the backing into the underlay and sometimes into the subfloor. This creates a multi-layered problem, as bacteria grow and worsen odours while potentially causing permanent colour loss. To effectively eliminate the odour and contamination, urine must be neutralised from all affected layers, which can be challenging—especially if pets have repeatedly urinated in the same spot, damaging both the carpet and underlay. For severe contamination, replacement may be the best option. For lighter to medium contamination, we can apply specialised solutions to neutralise odours.

Do you fix burn marks on carpet?

No, we don’t repair burns. Burn marks are considered structural damage to the fibres—not stains. In synthetic carpets, burns leave a hardened black residue, while wool carpets may turn to ash. Since the fibres are damaged or destroyed, cleaning methods like hot water extraction won't be able to restore them. For repairs, a specialist carpet repairer is required.

Why is PURT (Pet Urine Restorative Treatment) expensive?

PURT is more expensive because it involves specialised products like enzymatic cleaners to break down uric acid crystals deep within the carpet, underlay, and even the subfloor—applied to every affected spot. Fully eliminating odour and bacteria is challenging, and the process poses health risks for the operator, especially due to off-gassing of urine residue during work and from contaminated equipment inside the van after the job. Additionally, we have to set aside 30 minutes to an hour after the service for thorough decontamination of our extractor and tools.

Why isn’t stain removal included in the standard cleaning price?

Most marks and spots are removed during regular cleaning, but some stubborn stains need extra time and specialised solutions. If you notice any difficult stains during cleaning, we’ll inform you and give you the option to proceed with our specialised stain removal. Other times, we’re called only to treat accidental spills and then finish by cleaning the entire room to ensure a seamless blend.

Why isn’t stain removal and pet urine treatment covered by your 100% Satisfaction Guarantee?

Some stains are already permanent due to fibre damage, and pet urine can cause irreversible discolouration or damage to the carpet backing and underlay, so we can't return your carpet to how it used to look. It is a complex job due to the chemical nature of the procedure, so the outcomes of these treatments can be unpredictable sometimes, so they are difficult to guarantee under our standard policy. Our aim is always to improve the situation, but in some cases, the best we can do is minimise odour and stains, especially if the customer isn’t ready to replace their carpet at that time.
