Frequently Asked Questions About Rug Cleaning in Adelaide Hills

Will my rug get overly wet after cleaning?

No, we clean only the top of your rug, and in most cases, the backing remains dry. However, this isn't the case for thin, flimsy rugs without a thick, solid backing. For such rugs, it's a good idea to lift them off the floor or hang them on a clothesline, if possible, to ensure proper ventilation and drying.

What is the difference between your surface cleaning (in-home) and off-site laundry facility cleaning?

In our in-home cleaning, we clean only the surface (top) of your rug, not the backing, to avoid over-wetting, which can cause shrinkage, water marks, and odours if the rug takes days to dry. This service is ideal for light to medium soiling or freshening up. For heavily soiled or contaminated rugs, off-site cleaning at a laundry facility is recommended. This process involves immersing the entire rug in cleaning solutions, cleaning both sides, and ensuring proper drying in a temperature-controlled environment. However, off-site cleaning is more expensive—about $300 to $400 for a 3x3 rug—and it can take days to return your rug(s). We do not offer off-site services, so for this type of cleaning, we suggest searching on Google for nearby 'rug cleaning facilities.'

Do you need a special area to clean my rug?

All we need is for your rug to be in an accessible, clean area and fully opened. If you're considering using your garage, it's advisable to place plastic underneath in case the floor isn't clean. If you have multiple rugs to clean, placing them side by side in the same area is ideal; of course, whenever possible. This way, we won't need to move our equipment throughout your house from room to room.

How often should I clean my rugs?

It varies based on factors like foot traffic, pets, and personal cleanliness preferences. For low-traffic areas, professional cleaning every 12-18 months is usually sufficient. However, high-traffic spaces or homes with pets might require cleaning every 6-12 months or sooner to maintain freshness and hygiene.

Why does my rug smell a bit musty?

Rugs can emit odours for several reasons. Synthetic materials like polypropylene release volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which produce a chemical smell. Machine-made and tufted rugs with adhesives or latex backing may break down over time, especially when wet or exposed to sunlight, causing unpleasant odours. Since cleaning involves dampening the rug, the smell may temporarily intensify but should disappear or minimise as it dries. To help, we apply a sanitiser to minimise odours, and you can speed up drying by placing your rug in a well-ventilated area—outdoors is even better!

Why don't you clean sisal, jute, or seagrass rugs?

Steam cleaning is generally not suitable for these types of natural rugs, as they can react negatively to moisture, shrinking, warping, or discolouring. Dry-cleaning method is more appropriate for this type of rug.
